How Weight Loss Can Protect Your Knees
Can being overweight cause knee problems? A recent study says that obese people can significantly reduce their chances of knee pain when they lose weight. The cartilage in the knee degenerates with excess weight.
Osteoarthritis is a disease that can degenerate the joints and obesity can worsen the situation. But weight loss, according to this study, can reduce the chances of the degeneration.
This study further says that joint diseases, if not taken care of, can further lead to disability in many people. So, combating obesity is like kicking one risk factor aside.
This study has examined the relation between weight loss and degeneration of knee cartilage in around 500 patients who were obese. Most of them suffered osteoarthritis or other knee related issues.
Researchers categorised the participants of the study into 3 main groups. One group was not engaged in any weight loss endeavours whereas the second group lost some amount of weight during the study. The third group was asked to lose more than 10% of bodyweight as a part of the study.
The study was conducted in a span of 4 years. The results supported the fact that weight loss can protect the knees against further degeneration.
The group of people who lost nearly 10% of their weight experienced lesser degree of cartilage degeneration.
The other two groups who lost very little weight and who never lost any weight saw no difference in the degree of cartilage degeneration.
So, it means that losing weight can significantly impact the degeneration process that goes on in the knees. The risk of osteoarthritis can be significantly reduced in those who lose weight through regular exercise and the right diet.
So, what are you waiting for? If you are overweight, then get ready to knock of those excesspounds in order to save your knees from all the trouble.
